Tating — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 14 August 2026
This policy explains what Tating does with your information. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
The short version: Tating keeps your grooves on your phone. It has no accounts, no sign-in, no adverts and no analytics. It does not send your work anywhere.
The one exception is buying things, which goes through Google Play and a billing service called RevenueCat, and that is described in full below.
Who is responsible
Tating is published by Robert Benjamin Crawford.
If you want to ask anything about this policy, or about the information Tating holds, write to tatingapp@gmail.com.
What stays on your phone
All of this is stored on your device and never leaves it unless you send it somewhere yourself:
- Your grooves. Saved grooves, their titles, tags, folders and favourites live in a database file inside the app's own storage.
- Your settings. Theme, accent colour, and which drum sounds you have replaced with your own.
- Crash reports. If the app fails, it writes what went wrong — the time, the error message and the technical trace — into that same local storage, and keeps the last twenty. This is so you can read them and tell us what happened. They are never sent automatically. Nothing in the app uploads them.
Deleting the app removes all of it from the phone.
One thing to know, because it is Android's doing rather than Tating's: if you have Android's own app backup switched on, Android may copy Tating's data — grooves, settings, practice history — into your Google Drive backup along with every other app's. Tating does not put it there and cannot read it; it is Google's backup of your phone, covered by Google's own terms, and you can turn it off in Android's settings. Nothing is sent to us.
The microphone
Tating's PocketCheck feature listens while you play on a real kit, so it can show you where your hits landed against the beat. Android asks for microphone permission the first time you use it.
While it is listening, the sound is analysed on your phone, moment by moment, to work out when a hit happened. No recording is made. The audio is not saved to a file, not kept after the screen is closed, and not sent anywhere.
What is kept is the result — for each take, the tempo, how many hits landed and how many were missed, and how early or late they were on average. No sound, and nothing about the room. That is stored on your phone so the screen can show you whether you are getting better, and it stays until you delete the app.
If you never open PocketCheck, the microphone is never used.
Your own drum sounds
You can point any drum at an audio file of your own. Tating remembers where that file is on your phone so it can play it. It does not copy the file, upload it, or look at anything else on your device.
Sharing and exporting
Everything that leaves Tating leaves because you chose to send it:
- Sharing a groove opens your phone's normal share sheet with a link in it. You pick who gets it and which app sends it. Tating does not send it.
- Exporting sheet music (PDF) or a MIDI file writes the file into the app's temporary storage and hands it to the share sheet, so you can save it or send it on. Again, you choose the destination.
- Sending feedback opens your own email app with a message already addressed and with the app version and your Android version filled in, because those are the two things we always have to ask. Nothing is sent until you press send in your email app, and you can edit or delete anything in the message first. If you send it, we receive your email address, because that is how email works.
Buying things
Tating offers a one-time in-app purchase. This is the only part of the app that communicates with anyone.
Purchases are handled by Google Play Billing and by RevenueCat, a service that keeps track of what has been bought so your purchase still works when you change phone or reinstall.
- Google Play processes the payment. Tating never sees your card details, your name or your address. Google's handling of that is covered by Google's own privacy policy.
- RevenueCat receives the purchase and receipt information for the transaction, together with technical information about the device — including the app version, the operating system version, device model details and the IP address the request came from. It creates an anonymous app user ID for the installation so it can recognise the same purchase later. That ID is generated by the service and is not linked to your name, your email address or your Google account by Tating.
Tating does not send RevenueCat your grooves, your settings, your crash reports or anything from the microphone.
Their policies:
- RevenueCat — https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy/
- Google — https://policies.google.com/privacy
What Tating does not do
- No user accounts and no sign-in.
- No adverts, and no advertising or tracking software of any kind.
- No analytics: nothing counts your taps, your sessions or your screens.
- No location, contacts, photos, calendar, call or message data.
- Your grooves are never uploaded, backed up to us, or seen by anyone else.
- Nothing is sold or rented to anybody.
Children
Tating is a practice tool for drummers and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect information from children.
Your rights over your information
Almost everything Tating holds is on your own phone, and you control it directly: delete a groove, clear the crash log from inside the app, or uninstall the app to remove all of it.
Practice history is the one thing with no button of its own yet. A take's result outlives the groove it was played against — deliberately, so a groove you tidy away does not take your progress with it — and today the way to clear it is to uninstall. If you would rather it went sooner than that, write to the address below and say so.
The purchase records held by RevenueCat and Google are the exception. If you want a copy of the purchase records connected to your installation, or want them deleted, write to tatingapp@gmail.com and it will be dealt with. Deleting purchase records may mean a past purchase can no longer be restored.
Wherever you live, you can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, and ask for it to be deleted. Since Tating keeps nothing on a server of its own, in practice that means the purchase records above, and the address to write to is the one above. If you are in the UK or the EU you also have the right to complain to your national data protection regulator.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will replace this page and the date at the top will change. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes on Google Play.
